About
“My desire is to call attention to the fragility of life, the precious quality in each being, and the idea that each creature has a secret life infused in each piece.”
Originally from Virginia, Jennifer de Mello e Souza has been a resident of Edmonds, Washington, since 2002. Working from her home studio, she specializes in painting and sculpture, with a particular emphasis on nature studies. Her artistic endeavors celebrate whimsy, beauty, and a profound love for the natural world. Jennifer's landscapes are inspired by memories and a deep-seated longing to connect with the outdoors. She articulates her philosophy as an artist by stating,
“I am a teaching artist and an eternal student. It fuels my growth and curiosity.”
Jennifer’s passion for art was ignited during a gap year in the UK as a teenager, where she immersed herself in numerous art galleries and museums. She earned her BA in Art and Art History and has since lived in Brazil and France, furthering her education in scientific illustration, printmaking, and ceramics. Notably, she holds a certificate in Scientific Illustration from the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris. In 2012, she dedicated a year to studying painting in Brazil, resulting in a significant body of work that has been exhibited in the United States. Since then, she has continued to create and showcase her art.
Jennifer has participated in numerous solo shows and group exhibitions, including the annual Edmonds Art Studio Tour. Currently, she teaches ceramics at a public high school and conducts workshops in watercolor and ceramics.
